John 6:35-44 – Grace Alone LMCC 2017/10/22

Main thing: Humble yourself and depend on God’s special grace in Jesus.

“He who does not receive salvation purely through grace, independently of all good works, certainly will never secure it.” - Luther, sermon on Titus 3:4-8.

Grace is when God gives us what we do not deserve.

John 6:44
44a ‘No one can come to me
44b unless the Father who sent me draws them,
44c and I will raise them up at the last day.’

I. COMMON GRACE 44a
Acts 14:17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy."

But no-one was ever saved through common grace on its own.
Mt 5:45b He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
We should respond with thanks and perfect obedience, but we cannot.

John 6:44a ‘No one can come to me...

II. SPECIAL GRACE 44b

Augustine: ‘Lord make me chaste and continent, but not yet!’

Eph. 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

III. GRACE ALONE 44c

Rom. 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

John 6:44c and I will raise them up at the last day (because of his grace alone)

CONCLUSION

1 Peter 5:5b All of you, clothe yourselves with humility towards one another, because,
‘God opposes the proud but shows favour[=grace=?????] to the humble.’[Prov. 3:34]
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Now, back at the pearly gates: God the Father:
“Why should I let you into my perfect heaven where righteousness dwells?”
If your answer contains the words ‘I’ or ‘my’, you have failed to receive God’s grace, because grace is about God giving us what we do not deserve, as a free gift.

Q. And the right answer? A. “God’s special free undeserved grace in Jesus.”
